ITHACA — One of the U.S.’s 2017 Rhodes Scholarship winners is a senior from Cornell University.

The Rhodes scholar program provides two years of study at Oxford University in the U.K., and scholarships are given out on a yearly basis. One of this year’s recipients is Ahmed Ahmed, a biological sciences major in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Ahmed says he plans to pursue a master’s degree in chemistry at Oxford, and he wants to eventually become a doctor and scientist in translational medicine. It’s a field where results from lab research are fast-tracked to get to patients as quickly as possible.

Ahmed also mentors underrepresented students, and says he wants to continue to be an advocate for the disadvantaged outside the classroom.
