Walking the Country IV – The Final Fourth

On September 14th, Chris Allinger will set out again, one last time, on his trek across Tompkins County collecting money for the The Food Bank’s BackPack Program™.  The first three years of the walk raised over $80,000 for the program and saw it expand through Tompkins County.  The walk continues for the fourth year to continue to expand the program and sustain it in the schools where children rely on it.

Phone your contribution by calling the Resource Development office at the Food Bank at 607.796.6061 Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM and mention “Walkin’ the Country 4” or donate securely online Walkin’ the Country 4.

The Food Bank’s BackPack Program™ provides healthy, child-friendly, and easy to prepare foods to children at risk of hunger over weekends and holiday breaks when children do not have access to free or reduced price school meal programs. Each Friday children in need receive a bag of simple, easy to prepare food to get them through weekends and holidays.  These children, who rely on school lunch programs for sustenance, would otherwise go hungry when school is out.

Chris’s walk will take him to every corner of the county collecting the $3 dollars that it takes to fill a child’s backpack for the weekend.

Here’s the schedule for Walking the Country 4:

Monday, September 14

9:00 AM 1st step at Cornell University – We start at Cornell with an address to the coaches.  I am happy to stop at any office to pick up a collection.  Contact me to schedule it.

You can call the station during the show at 607-257-9769, or the front office at 607-257-6400.

You can also drop me a line at wakeupq@qcountry1037.com

At about noon, the Cornell Division of Financial Affairs in the East Hill Plaza has offered to provide us with lunch when we stop for their donation collection!

5:00 PM  Last stop of the day is at the Slaterville Fire Department.  They’ve been kind enough to invite me to end the first day there again this year.  (And I still have my hat!)

Tuesday, September 15

6:00 AM  I’ll broadcast during the Wake Up Q from Dandy Mart in Slaterville.  We always have a great morning with these great folks.

Lunchtime stop is Dryden Hotel.  You can’t walk to Dryden without stopping at one of my favorite places.

5:00 PM  The last stop of the day is Groton.  It only makes sense that the last step of the walk this day is on Allinger Drive right in the middle of town.  If you don’t know where my street is, meet me at Main Street and we’ll walk there.  After the official final step, we head to Roman Village to celebrate the end of Day 2.

Wednesday, September 16

6:00 AM Our starting point will be in Groton at a place TBA.

Lunchtime stop is at Lansing Community Center.  Food will be provided by Firehouse Subs if you’d like to stop and make a donation.  From here I’ll walk up to Myers Park and get a boat ride across the lake to Mike and Tammy Milliman for a boat ride toTaughannock Falls State Park and then walk up to…

5:00 PM  Trumansburg for a party at Ron Don’s.

Thursday, September 17

6:00 AM  The Falls Tavern is a favorite stop on the walk and, actually, anytime.  We always have a great breakfast when we start the day there. By 8:15, I’ll be meeting the children at Trumansburg Central School for the send off for a big day.

Lunchtime we’ll be at the Enfield Fire Hall.  These great folks prepare a beautiful spread of food for the energy to take the long walk to…

5:00 PM  Stella’s Barn in Newfield.  It’s always a thrill to see the folks outside giving such a warm reception as I’m walking to their parking lot.

Friday, September 18

6:00 AM  We broadcast the Wake Up Q from Freddy’s Diner.  These folks were the first to sign up to be a stop on this year’s walk.

Lunchtime we’re back at the Danby Fire Hall.  Our friend Gay “Hollywood” Huddle gathers friends for a great stop and this year we’re going to have Rogan’s Pizza supplying the energy.

From there we head to Ithaca College to meet our friends and walk down the hill to our final stop at Wegmans parking lot where we hand the torch off to their Fill the Bus campaign.

Hopefully this route will make it easy to find you and add your $3.00 to my backpack.

See ya on the road…

Chris
