Ithaca At The Olympics!


Greg Fry was kind enough to compile a list of local athletes that are in the Olympics.

 

CORNELL

 

  • Adrian Durant – He is the Cornell men’s track and field coach, and he will be coaching the U.S. Virgin Islands team.

 

  • Muhammad Halim – He is a 2008 graduate of Cornell, and a former NCAA triple jump champion. He will be on the U.S. Virgin Islands Olympic squad, competing in the men’s triple jump (Starts Monday, August 15th).  More

 

  • Stephen Mozia – He is a 2015 graduate of Cornell, and will be representing Nigeria in the shot put. He is regarded as having the best shot for a Cornellian to win a medal. Right now he has the third longest shot put through in the world this year at more than 71 feet. (Event starts Thursday, August 18th)  More 

 

  • Bruno Hortelano-Roig – He is a 2014 graduate of Cornell, and was this year’s European Champion in the 200 meters, where this video got him a lot of attention . He’ll compete in the 100 and 200 meter races, representing Spain. (100 meter starts Saturday, August 13; 200 meter starts Tuesday, August 16).  More

 

  • Rudy Winkler – He is a senior at Cornell, who will compete in the hammer throw. Winkler won the U.S. Olympic trials back in July. More
  • (Event starts Wednesday, August 17)

 

  • Tracy Eisser – She is a 2012 grad of Cornell, who will be competing on the U.S. quadruple sculls team (that’s rowing, by the way). Eisser helped the U.S. women’s team win its first-ever gold medal in the event at the World Rowing Championships in 2015. (Starts Saturday, August 6th) More 

 

 

 

  • Alex Karwoski – Also a 2012 grad of Cornell, and also a member of the U.S Rowing team. He’ll be participating in the Olympics as part of the U.S. Men’s Eight squad. (Starts Monday, August 8)  More

 

ITHACA COLLEGE

 

  • Meghan Musnicki – 2006 graduate of Ithaca College, who is also a gold-medal winner from the 2012 games in London as part of the U.S. women’s eight rowing team. Musnicki has won 17 medals in international competition for her career. Opening heats start Monday, August 8th.  More

 

  • Emily Morley – She is a 2016 graduate of Ithaca College, who will be representing the Bahamas. She’ll compete in a single scull, with opening heats on Saturday, August 6th. More

 

 

OTHER LOCAL NOTES

 

  • Gil Hanse – He earned a masters from Cornell in 1989, and was hired to design the golf course that will be used in the Olympics. Golf hasn’t been played at the Olympics since 1904.  More

 

  • Olivia Coffey – She’s an alternate for the U.S. Women’s Rowing team, and most likely will not compete. She is a native of Watkins Glen.   More

 

  • David Hughes – He was born in Ithaca, but moved to Maine at a young age. He’ll be a part of the U.S. Sailing team.  More

 

  • 13 Ithaca College students will be interning with NBC as part of the network’s Olympic coverage. NBC has recruited interns from the Park School at Ithaca College since 2006.  More

Actor Kiefer Sutherland was arrested on suspicion of criminal threats early Monday morning after Los Angeles police say he assaulted a ride-hail driver.
