Destination Tuesday – Gutter Tomato in Downtown Ithaca?
Destination Tuesday – Gutter Tomato in Downtown Ithaca?

This was too weird not to share – Usually for destination Tuesday I’ll pick a weird roadside attraction or a fun museum.

But today I’m picking a little 2 foot section on the side of the road on Aurora Street in downtown Ithaca.

Let me explain.

My girlfriend and I were walking down the hill to grab some dinner and catch a movie at Cinemapolis last night, when we noticed a weed growing in the gutter. At first I didn’t think any thing of it, until we noticed what was unmistakably a full green tomato growing on the vine. It was right outside of the Ithaca Ale House if you wanna check it out for yourself.

How did a tomato plant end up there? I’ve tried and failed to grow tomatoes in a well maintained garden, but then I look on the side of the road and see a beautiful, perfectly edible tomato growing on the side of the road? Did someone plant it? Was it just a mistake? A weird twist of fate? Should I pick it, wash it and make a salad?
