ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Advocacy Center of Tompkins County has a new executive director.

The licensed provider of services for victims of domestic and sexual abuse has chosen Jennifer Brownell to fill the position. Brownell was chosen by the Board of Directors after a competitive national search.

“Jennifer brings a unique and impressive portfolio of experiences to the Advocacy Center,” said Board President Terri Brace. “The Board of Directors is looking forward to collaboration with her and are eager to see the positive impact she will have on the agency.”

Brownell comes with 25 years of non-profit experience, including 15 in leadership, and was most recently the head of the Child Advocacy Center of the Finger Lakes. Brownell oversaw growth in the organization that raised its annual budget from $120,000 to roughly $1 million.

“I am honored to have been offered the opportunity to lead The Advocacy Center of Tompkins County on this next leg of their journey,” said Brownell. “The Advocacy Center has been built on a strong foundation, including many years of hard work and dedication from the community. I hope to build upon this foundation, to continue to provide the services and empowerment needed to those who have been victimized by abuse. I am looking forward to getting started and integrating myself into the community.”

The Advocacy Center’s previous executive director, Heather Campbell, left in February to be the Deputy Director for the New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
