HOMER — Police say a crash along Route 90 in Homer Thursday morning has left one man dead.

According to State Police, the crash happened when a car driven by a 61-year-old Cortland man drifted from the southbound into the northbound lane and hit a tractor trailer almost head-on. The car spun off onto the shoulder of the road, and the truck ran off the road into a swampy area, spilling diesel fuel on the road and the whey it was carrying into the swamp. Cleanup crews were called in to take care of the spills.

Police say the driver of the truck, 48-year-old Michael Gross of Norwich, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but the Cortland man was declared dead at the scene. That man hasn’t been identified yet, and police say it’s not clear why he crossed onto the wrong side of the road.
