Interstate 81 shut down for hours due to tractor trailer crash

Sheriff’s investigators in Broome County say a “medical problem” was the reason a driver lost control of his tractor trailer and crashed on Interstate 81 late Sunday night.

The accident happened just after 11 p.m., about one mile north of Exit 8 in Whitney Point.

Deputies say the driver, James Thorn, 55, of Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, suffered a medical issue that caused him to lose control of his truck. That truck then traveled off of I-81 northbound, across the median and eventually stopped across both lanes of I-81 southbound.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed between Exit 9 (Marathon) and Exit 8 for roughly 5 1/2 hours, according to deputies, as the truck was removed from the road, and as fuel and hydraulic fluid were cleaned from the roadway.

The driver was taken to a hospital, but investigators say he did not complain of any injuries from the accident.
