Police say Collegetown home invasions aren’t connected

ITHACA — Cornell Police officials say the recent home invasions in the College neighborhood are not connected.

Two separate incidents were reported where a man stood at the foot of a woman’s bed and when she woke up, he fled saying “sorry.” The first occurred around 5:15 in the morning on Thursday and the second happened just two hours later.

Deputy Chief of the Cornell Police Dave Honan says residents should be proactive and check their locks.

“We encourage all members of our community and the greater Ithaca community to lock your doors and lower level windows. It’s just basic personal safety to keep anybody who may try inadvertently try to enter or potentially intentionally try to enter your house or apartment for burglary or trespassing,” he said.

Last month, there were also multiple incidents were women were harassed in the neighborhood near the university’s campus. One woman reported that a man had entered her apartment and stood at the foot of her bed. Another was walking on Campus Road and was repeatedly asked by a man in an SUV to get into the car.

Honan says all the reports over the past few weeks are being investigated separately.

“At this moment we have no information that these incidents are connected, but that’s why we use our crime alerts system to make sure the community is aware of them so that they, if they’re a victim themselves, let them know it’s okay to report it and we can also gather information from witnesses,” he said.

The Ithaca Police Department is also assisting in the investigations.
