Fatal crash shuts down Route 96 north of Ithaca

UPDATE: The road was re-opened as of 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.  

TRUMANSBURG — Route 96 in Trumansburg will be shut down for the next several hours today following a fatal motor vehicle accident.

The crash happened at the intersection of 96 and Perry City Road by Willow Creek around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The preliminary investigation from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office says a small sedan traveling east bound on Perry City Road pulled out in front of a Casella’s Waste Truck, which was heading south on 96. After the vehicles collided, the car went by a ditch on the side of the roadway.

Authorities confirmed the woman driving the car was killed in the accident and was found dead at the scene.

The name of the victim has yet to be released. An investigation into the crash is still on-going.
