OWEGO, N.Y. (WHCU) — A state of emergency has been declared in Tioga County about the possible arrival of migrants seeking asylum.

Legislative Chair Martha Sauerbrey says the county “cannot sustain services or resources needed to support an influx of individuals.” Sauerbrey also cites Tioga County’s housing crisis. The state of emergency will remain in place for 30 days.

Title 42, which was created under former President Donald Trump, expired at midnight on Friday. Similar orders have been announced across the Southern Tier, including Chemung County.
