ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is rolling out a new way to take phone calls.

Two unarmed sheriff’s clerks were recently hired to handle various situations. Sheriff Derek Osborne says noise complaints are one example.

He says they’ll also handle phone scams.

Osborne says the clerks will be supervised by Road Patrol sergeants. They start taking calls July 5.
