Willet woman charged in welfare fraud investigation

WILLET, N.Y. (WHCU) – A Cortland County woman is facing charges stemming from welfare fraud.

Authorities arrested 42-year-old Melissa Wallace, of Willet, Saturday, March 11, 2023, after an investigation by the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department and the Cortland County Department of Social Services.

Wallace allegedly failed to disclose changes in the composition of her household and submitted fraudulent paperwork that resulted in benefits she was not entitled to in excess of $3500.00. She’s charged with felonies of welfare fraud, grand larceny, and 2 counts of offering a false instrument for filing. She’ll appear in Cortland City Court on March 27, 2023.
