Cortland’s school district splits cell phone rule for high school, junior high

CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — The Cortland Enlarged City School District is taking a layered approach to implementing a state-mandated smartphone ban in classrooms.

Superintendent Bob Edwards explained the district’s decision on the Aug. 15, 2025 edition of Ithaca’s Morning News, starting with Cortland High School.

Cortland Junior High is different.

Edwards adds electronic devices in the district’s elementary schools are not usually a problem, so only a couple lockboxes will be placed in buildings.
