ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Experts say better air quality is on the horizon, but not today.

Fine particles from Canadian wildfires remain in the air, and the DEC has extended an air quality advisory for much of the state, including Central New York, through midnight tonight.

DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton says we could see a break in the bad quality as soon as tomorrow, but that situation remains fluid.

Lefton says the DEC is keeping a watchful eye on weather forecasts and wind patterns.

A rating on the Air Quality Index (AQI) of 150 or above is considered unhealthy for all to varying and increasing degrees. Ithaca reached the low 150s on Monday but has otherwise remained in the 100-150 range.

An AQI between 100 and 150 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, which include the elderly, small children, teens, and people with respiratory or heart issues.

What does that mean for the average person?

New York State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald shares guidelines but cautions the public to pay attention and stay informed.

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
