On February 7, Tri-Union Seafoods recalled a variety of canned tuna because of a faulty pull-tab seal. Company officials say they received word from their supplier that the “easy open” pull tabs have a defect that compromises the integrity of the seal. It could leak or lead to toxin contamination that causes botulism, which can be deadly.
No illnesses associated with the product have been reported, but consumers are warned not to ingest the tuna regardless of how it appears or smells. Anyone feeling sick should seek immediate medical attention.
The products were sold under different brands at multiple national retailers, but only Trader Joe’s is affected in New York.
