Cayuga County deputy on leave after rape charges, sheriff says

AUBURN, NY (607NewsNow) — Charges filed against a Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputy. 

Hunter Lawrence was arrested Friday, July 3 on allegations of sexually abusing a child under the age of 17. Sheriff Brian Schenck says Lawrence was placed on paid administrative leave soon after his arrest on charges of felony rape.

Lawrence, who’s 25, joined the department in June 2023 as a road patrol deputy. According to troopers, “there are no allegations that the conduct occurred while he was on duty.”

The alleged rapes occurred “over an extended period of time.” Lawrence is charged with:

  • Two counts of Rape in the Second Degree, a Class D felony
  • Two counts of Rape in the Third Degree, a Class E felony
  • Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a misdemeanor

Lawrence was arraigned at the Cortland County jail after his arrest.
