CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A new phone scam is making the rounds in New York State.

The Cortland Police Department says residents have received texts claiming to be an “Official Speeding Violation Notice,” and want you to know the signs.

In the message, the scammer claims you were caught speeding on a camera, urges payment in a short time frame, and threatens that failure to pay could result in consequences such as failing your inspection. The text will also include a suspicious payment link and is not sent by a New York State or local law enforcement agency.

Cortland PD reminds you that legitimate traffic violations are sent by mail, not phone, and state and local courts will never demand payment via text message.

If you receive a scam message, do not respond and delete it. If you clicked the link or provided information, contact your bank or credit card company immediately.
