CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A dorm fire is under investigation at SUNY Cortland.

On October 29, firefighters arrived at Cheney Hall around 11:30 p.m. to find hallways filled with smoke.

Crews determined the blaze originated in a room on the basement level and went to work putting it out. The Cortland Fire Department credits the actions of a Resident Advisor, who used a dry chemical extinguisher to knock down the flames before firefighters arrived.

No injuries were reported, and students were able to reoccupy most of the building after the air quality was deemed safe. The basement remains closed for further evaluation.

The City of Cortland Fire Investigation Team is working with the State University Police Department at Cortland to determine the cause of the incident.
