VIRGIL, NY (607NewsNow) – Land in Cortland County is being protected.

On September 29, the Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) announced a perpetual conservation easement of 203 acres in Virgil. Conservation easements are legal agreements that limit future uses of the land to maintain its conservation value. It remains on local tax rolls and is available for farming, hunting, and other traditional uses.

The property was donated by landowners Jim Povero and Sandy Yahner, and is a mix of open meadows, forest, and agricultural fields. The key addition spans the divide between the Cayuga Lake watershed and the Susquehanna River Watershed.
