OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) – Tioga County is honoring a late public safety official.

On July 20, the tenth anniversary of his death, officials dedicated a memorial plaque to former Fire Coordinator John V. Scott.

The plaque was installed at the Carmichael Radio Tower site, where Scott was fatally hit by a truck in 2016. Officials say you can draw a line between Scott’s advocacy for emergency communication improvements and the new communication system that’s nearing completion in the county.

“John Scott understood that effective emergency response begins with reliable communication,” said Tioga County Director of Emergency Services Corinne Cornelius. “His commitment to improving public safety never wavered, and today’s dedication serves as a reminder that the work he began continues to benefit every resident of Tioga County. We are honored to recognize his legacy alongside his wife and daughter and the many public safety professionals who worked with him.”

Scott, who at the time of his death had served as fire coordinator since 1999, was also a 45-year member of the Campville Fire Department, the Town of Owego Fire District Commissioner, and served on the NYS Chiefs Association Board, as well as the NYS Fire Chiefs Convention planning committee.
