ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Ithaca will see a new mural that celebrates refugees and immigrants.

The painting will be on West State Street, near the Southern Tier AIDS Program and Tompkins County Human Services Building. Funding from the Tompkins County Tourism Board and Community Arts Partnership will support the project.

According to county documents, the mural will feature diverse clothing styles and monarch butterflies that symbolize migration. It’ll be painted by Ithaca-based artist Hugo Medina.

The Tompkins County Legislature unanimously approved the project on March 3. Ithaca Welcomes Refugees, a nonprofit group serving refugees and immigrants, will manage the mural’s creation.
