ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – As summer weather approaches, check your air conditioners.
Nearly 1.7 million air conditioners have been recalled because they don’t drain properly, which can cause mold buildup that leads to respiratory issues.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there have been 152 reports of mold in the air conditioners, including 17 of consumers “experiencing symptoms such as respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing and/or sore throats from mold exposure.”
The window units were manufactured by Midea and sold in three sizes under 10 different brand names, including Frigidaire and Insignia. They were sold in-store nationwide and multiple retailers, including Home Depot and Best Buy, as well as online at Amazon, Lowe’s, Walmart, BJ’s, and more.
The 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU units were priced between $280 and $500 from March 2020 through May 2025. The products are white and measure around 22 inches wide and 14 inches high. The brand name is printed on the units, and the model number can be found on the front right side when you’re facing the air conditioner.
