CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — SUNY Cortland is offering a new online master’s program that streamlines the process for obtaining a teacher certification.

The program, M.S.T. in Adolescence Education, Grades 7-12, gives students a “centralized path to earn initial New York state certification in four tracks: Englishmathscience and social studies,” according to the SUNY Cortland website. The program is designed to appeal to undergraduate students who did not previously consider a career in education and are approaching graduation, and adults past the traditional college age who are looking for a career change.

Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Carol Van Der Karr obtained partial funding for the program, as well as Dean of the School of Education Andrea Lachance who secured funding through SUNY’s Transformation Fund.

The criteria for the program is listed on the SUNY Cortland website as follows:

  • Applicants must earn a bachelor’s degree before enrolling in the program and submit the following materials:
  • A completed online Graduate School Application
  • Official transcripts from all higher education institutions attended.
  • A personal writing sample that describes background experience and career goals.
  • Resume.
  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to the candidate’s suitability for a career in teaching.

Applications for the fall semester are due by July 1st, 2026, and spring semester applications are due December 1st, 2026. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Learn more about the program and how to enroll here.
