Newfield man faces up to 25 years for Van Etten crimes, murder trial pending


ELMIRA, NY (CortacaToday) – A Newfield man faces up to 25 years in prison.

Joseph Howell, 38, was convicted on Monday, August 26, 2024, on two counts of burglary, two counts of robbery, and kidnapping. Howell and two others broke into a Van Etten home in February 2023, robbed the homeowner at gunpoint, and abducted him. Howell’s sentencing is scheduled for October 25, 2024.

Howell also faces charges, including first and second-degree murder, in the 2023 killing of Ithaca man Thomas Rath. That trial is scheduled to begin on October 7 in Tioga County.
