ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Beware of a sophisticated phone scam.

The New York State Department of Health (DOH) says scammers are posing as a DOH employee and asking for personal information in regard to a controlled substance prescription.

Officials say they could have a case or ID number, and the call may even show up as the Department of Health on your caller ID, but it is not. If you receive a call like this, you are encouraged to report it to local law enforcement.

Learn more about how to avoid scams from the New York State Division of Consumer Protection here.
