NYSP issues warning about nationwide sextortion scam

ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – The New York State Police warn you about a prevalent national scam.

Authorities say the scammer obtains emails and other personal info purchased illegally on the dark web and uses it to claim they have access to your phone, tablet, or computer, including your pictures and internet history. The offender claims they will expose your information if you do not send them payment in Bitcoin.

Officials say the scammer does not have access to your devices. Do not divulge any additional information and report any scam you receive to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.

For a more detailed description of the scam, read the Facebook release from the New York State Police below.
