ASHLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – Authorities are investigating a crash in Chemung County.

On August 21, deputies responded to Interstate 86 in the Town of Ashland for a report that a car had struck a dairy cow in the road.

The driver, identified as Alexander McDonald of Arizona, says he was traveling to Owego from Liverpool and could not avoid the animal, which was estimated to weigh 1,200 pounds. The cow was killed on impact.

Investigators are trying to determine who owned the unbranded cow, which only had an ear and back tag with the number 662, and does not belong to any farmers in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office at (607) 737-2950.
