ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is warning businesses about a scam.

On December 1, the sheriff’s office shared that several local establishments have recently received calls from a man claiming to be a law enforcement sergeant.

The caller is telling stores that police have received an alert that the business has counterfeit $100 bills in its register. The caller then instructs an employee to verify what’s in the register in an attempt to learn how much cash the business has on hand.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office says no law enforcement agency will place calls to a business to confirm the contents of their cash register.
