Sheriff warns of money transfer scam in Cortland County

CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A new scam is making the rounds in Cortland County.

According to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, citizens have reported receiving a letter requesting personal information to facilitate a money transfer.

The letter is on official sheriff’s office letterhead and is digitally signed by Sheriff Mark Helms.

Helms says they’ll never request that kind of information in mail correspondence, and it’s best to avoid giving your personal information online, by mail, or to anyone you don’t know personally.

Sheriff Helms asks anyone who receives a letter to contact his office at (607) 753-3311.
