TC3 to cut basketball, golf in 2026-27 academic year

DRYDEN, NY (607NewsNow) — The upcoming school year at Tompkins Cortland Community College will offer fewer sports for students.

Citing a 43% rise in adult students over recent years, TC3 is only sponsoring four sports in the 2026-27 academic year: men’s baseball, men’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, and women’s softball.

“It’s not a college budget issue that is causing us to pause these programs; it’s a matter of reallocating of funds to better serve the changing student population,” a spokesperson for TC3 told 607 News Now. “Less funding is going to athletics, which is why we need to reduce the sports being offered, but more funding will be going to student activities that serve adult students.”

Men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s soccer, women’s basketball, and women’s golf have been placed on pause for 2026-27.

“The coaches and all of the student-athletes impacted by this decision were notified last week, and the college is offering assistance to any student-athlete that wants to transfer to another school that offers a sport that we have paused,” the spokesperson added.

According to projections, “adult students will make up the majority of the student body for the 2026-27 school year.”
