OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) – Health officials are focusing on youth recreation safety in Tioga County.

Tioga County Public Health recently launched its Helmet First, Ride Second Program, which educates children on riding safety while on bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and other similar recreational vehicles.

The program, made possible by a grant from the Floyd Hooker Foundation, also distributes free helmets across the county. Officials say 225 helmets have already been given out this summer. The health department says it looks forward to continued partnerships with schools, camps, recreation programs, and community organizations to expand the initiative.

To learn more or schedule a distribution event, call Tioga County Public Health at (607) 687-8600.
