AURORA, NY (607NewsNow) – Wells College is on the open market again.

According to The Auburn Citizen, the planned sale of the Aurora campus to the Hiawatha Institute has been terminated after the group failed to close on the property and did not meet the terms of the purchase agreement.

It comes after repeated challenges in court from the Cayuga Nation and others.

The non-profit group, which submitted the winning $12.5 million bid in January, had intended to establish a college dedicated to preserving Native American history. Wells representatives have not indicated how they’ll move forward, but other bids, including from an alumni group, the Cleveland Commission for Wells, were previously submitted.

Founded in 1868, Wells College closed in the spring of 2024 for financial reasons.
