Booms In Newfield

Yup, I heard…and FELT it too!

For two weeks in a row, Newfield residents have been jolted on a Saturday night by a loud explosion that shakes the house and rattles windows and nerves.  There’ve been a lot of people calling this morning wondering, “Was I the only one who heard it?”

The short answer is no.  People in surrounding areas – Enfield, Danby and Spencer – claim to have heard it too.

While it’s only speculation, people have blamed it on:

A – A sonic boom from military aircraft doing night-time drills or

B – something called a ‘Frost Quake’ when water freezes quickly underground and cracks the surrounding dirt or rock.

Here’s what that’s like:

A third option came this morning from an anonymous caller who claimed to know people in the Newfield area that work with Tannerite which is an explosive compound that will blow stuff up when triggered by a high powered gunshot.

Like this:

Of course, this is all speculation.  While 911 was alerted, there’s been no definitive answer as to what caused the Booms.

Any ideas?
